Chinese Wedding Traditions
Posted on May 31, 2007 in the Chinese Wedding Traditions category
As you may or may not have known, I am getting married next year to Dave who is chinese and I am a mix of chinese and vietnamese. I’m a little bit confused as I don’t know if we have to follow all the Chinese wedding traditions like the combing of the hair the night before the wedding. Dave has no hair to comb anyway hehehe. Apparently tradition calls for the bride and groom to be in their own homes, both showered and dressed. The bride has to sit by the window facing out to the moon, whilst the groom has to sit facing in towards to the house. Usually it is the parents who comb their sons and daughters hair whilst reciting these ancient sayings
* The first combing symbolizes “from beginning to end.”
* The second combing means “harmony from now through old age.”
* The third combing is a wish for many grandchildren.
* The fourth combing offers hope for wealth and a marriage that lasts a long, long time.
My cousin got married last year and she had to go through quite alot of the chinese wedding traditions but she and her husband are fully chinese so I don’t know whether or not this applies to us.
There is another chinese wedding tradition that me and my fiancee were talking about which is the bouncing of a baby on a newly bought bed which is meant to bless us with kids. I think my fiancee is quite keen on this tradition as we plan to have lots of kids.
There are a few more traditions that we are definitely going to be following, like the wedding door games, the tea ceremony and the chinese wedding banquet.

shall i grow some hair so that we can do some lucky combing?
I must say for a vietnamese girl you certainly throwing all the stops to have a Chinese wedding and know all the traditions. You’re putting many authentic chinese girls to shame!
As for the combing, I went through that routine. Was very humilating cos I had to wear some pyjamas and they were 2 sizes too small, sleeves upto my elbows, trousers upto my knees etc. Looked like a right tw@
Lucky Dave hadn’t arrived in HK yet at the time cos he would have keep photographic evidence of it all.
Bouncing baby on the bed seemed to have helped us…

And as for the door games, tea ceremony and banquet, they are definite must-haves. Good luck with the planning, give my missus a bell if you need and tips or help. It can be stressful but will be very satisfying when it all comes together at the end.
CONGRATULATIONS SALLY AND DAVE!!
