My Chinese Wedding 2008

I’m getting married in 2008! Help!

Booking the registrar

Posted on November 22, 2007 in the General Wedding Plans category

Today I called up the registry office to book our Civil Ceremony at Newstead Abbey. We have finally picked our date - April 8th 2008. They asked me what time I wanted the ceremony and I said 11am which hasn’t been confirmed yet as we haven’t even sorted out journey times etc but he explained that this is a provisional booking and if I want to change the time by 30min to an hour then that was fine. He would book Newstead Abbey for us but we would also have to contact them to sort out the fees etc.

He also explained the fees. It would cost us £30 each to give notice of marriage, which means I have to go to the registry office in Worcester and Dave will have to go to the one in nottingham. The fee for the registrar to come out to Newstead Abbey is £263.50 which is payable 2 months before the wedding. There is also the fee to hire the venue which is around £750. It’s all adding up now especially if you compare the price if you got married in a registry office which would only be £43.50.

He then explained that many couples book appointments to see the registrar a few months prior to the wedding to discuss the ceremony i.e the vows, the music, the readings…..so theres those details to decide aswell. We both think that we should say our own vows but maybe not memorise them as my memory is like a sieve and I don’t want to be stood up in front of everyone and forget my words. How embrassing would that be??

I’m not really confused yet as he said that when I contact Worcester Registry Office they will explain what I need to do to give my notice of marriage. Hopefully I will get it done next week and maybe even make Dave sort his out the same week too.

Next step……………..book restaurant for banquet (also work out the a schedule for the day)

Oh wow - that’s such a big difference in price depending on location!

Congratulations on picking a date :) I’ve just recently gotten engaged to my bf and we want our wedding next year but we have to wait for dates from his parents. I guess once you have that, you have something to work towards esp in terms of venue and deadlines!

I have also had similar problems with booking due to waiting to confirm when auspcious dated for 2008 were. We had booked the registrar and venue for 30 August 2008 but it has transpired this is no so good a date. so I duly had to change registrar, make up artist and venue to 9 August 2008!! But as this is now the fixed date more things can be done for the planning of other things! So much easier I think if it was purely a western wedding :p

I was also tempted to get married in the registery office which was only £50.00 compared to the venue which was £650.00 but at the end of the day you only get married once so should get the best venue where most of the scenic pcitures will be taken as a memory you will cherish forever

Congratulations Maggie, yes it makes a big difference when you’ve got your date then you can actually start organizing things, although there are some things you can do even without the official date. i.e the wedding dress

Yes Chun my other half thinks the same as you, he wants to get married in a nicer place with nice scenery. I want that too as long as its not too expensive. Now we just have to find a good photographer who can make the most of the amazing scenery.

I have been engaged to my partner now for almost 2 years and although we want quite a long engagement i am starting to look in to venues etc. He is chinese (BBC) and i am English so we wnat something to suit both families. I was looking at your venue and it looks so nice however we are looking to get married in Birmingham , do you know of any similar venues for the Civil Ceremony?

I look forward to hearing from you

    Many Thanks

Hi Kirsty, Thank you for coming to visit my website. Congratulations on your upcoming wedding. Will you be having a Chinese Wedding or an English one? There are a few venues outside of Birmingham which might be suitible for your wedding. I have wrote a few posts about it, just search on my page for wedding venues.

    Hi Kirsty,

No we never did get round to visiting Stone Manor but it does look like a wonderful place for a wedding. The choice of having a chinese or english wedding was more down to my husbands family. He is the only boy in his family so they wanted to keep the chinese wedding traditions. My husband and I were swaying towards an English style wedding but in the end we were glad that we had more of a Chinese style wedding. Good luck with your wedding plans and congratulations.

    Sally
