My Chinese Wedding 2008

I’m getting married in 2008! Help!

Our Wedding 08.04.08 - The Tea Ceremony & Photos

Posted on June 20, 2008 in the Real Weddings category

It is tradition to burn incense at the beginning of the Tea Ceremony as a mark of respect to my grandfather.

The Tea Ceremony started with me and Dave kneeling down in front of my grandma. We then offer my grandma a cup of tea from each of us, in return she hands us a lai see (lucky red envelope) and says words to wish us well in our marriage.

In Chinese Wedding Traditions, the tea ceremony would start off with the eldest in the family and continue in desending order.

My Dad giving me a big lai see

My mom receiving her tea

Dave offering tea to my aunty

My aunty & uncle

My uncle giving me a gold bracelet on behalf of my aunty

Tea for my sister and her husband

Because my sister and I are of the same generation, me and Dave don’t have to kneel down in front of them. We all just stand up for the ceremony.

    Hi Sally,
Can you tell me where you got the red teacups for your tea ceremony from?

    Many thanks.

    Kind regards.

Many congratulations to you and your husband. You look as though you have a fab holiday. I am geeting married in Sept and apparently the Maldives at that month is not good as it is monsoon weather!!!!

Anyway thanks for your blogs they have been really informative.A questions I have for you is….I am getting married to a “gwai-lo” and therefore unsure whether to undertake the traditional chinese tea ceremonies. I would like to participate in these traditions as my family will be attending.Another spanner in the works is that we are getting married and having the reception at the same place.Any ideas of how I can get around this.

I have informed my husband to be’s family about the process, but unsure of how I can carry out the tea ceremonies.help!!!!
