Trying on wedding dresses - My first trip
Posted on June 13, 2007 in the The Wedding Look, Tips/Reviews category
I booked an appointment to try on a few wedding dresses at New Bride in Nottingham for Tuesday, the lady on the phone sounded abit stuck up when she was asking questions about my forthcoming wedding. She said that I have only 10 months and its not a long time when shes getting orders for dresses for wedding in september 2008 already and that ideally I should have started planning my wedding a few months back. In fairness I do understand because wedding dresses take between 3-6 months to make but actually choosing your ideal wedding dress may take you the same amount of time.
I took one of my bridesmaids along with me, when we arrived the lady greeted us and asked me to fill in a questionaire. It was just questions about my wedding, like when its happening and what the budget is etc. After that she gave me 6 plastic tags and told me to walk around the shop and see if there were any dresses I would like to try on and put the tag on it. The shop is quite a decent size, I think they roughly stock 60-70 dresses. I knew that they stocked Maggie Sottero dresses and so I went to that rail first. I think I picked about 4 Maggie Sottero dresses to try on and also 2 from a designer in London - Suzanne Neville.
The first dress I tried on was from Maggie Sottero, it was priced at £750. I really liked the dress. It was an Ivory dress but both the lady and my bridesmaid said I could get away with wearing white because on my skin colouring as I’m quite tanned and white will truly stand out more. I have just checked the dress on the Maggie Sottero website and I’m really surprised because the dress looks better on than in pictures so you can’t really judge each dress until you actually have it on.
I tried some more Sottero dresses, all priced around the £1250 mark which is a big difference compared to the first dress I tried on. 3 out of 4 of these dresses were fishtail style which I really like as A line styles are too big, well they don’t show off my curves as fishtail dresses do, they rather hide everything which is great if you have big hips. The last Sottero dress was absolutely stunning, I can’t really describe it as I know my fiancee reads this site and I don’t want to give any details about my dress to him.
The last 2 dresses I tried on were both £1950 and because of the price I was quite reluctant to try it on. I think the most important thing before you go to try on dresses is work out your budget. I didn’t know what my budget is and I still don’t which makes the task of finding your wedding dress harder.
I found the whole experience an eye opener, the lady seemed to warm up to us towards the end, giving advice on what to do next. She wrote down the model numbers of all the dresses that I really liked so I could go and look at the pictures online and compare them to others that are on the website too. She explained the whole process if I bought a dress from her, if I ordered that day, I would be getting the dress around september time as it gets made in China. Hmmmm China??? so all the dresses get made in China which means I could get a dress dirt cheap if I ever went over there. That leaves me wondering whether or not I should order from all these chinese online wedding shops. I mean each wedding dress is about $200 but you don’t know what the quality is like. Should I take a risk and order a dress or not??
Well this visit to a bridal shop really helped as I now know what kind of dress I’m looking for and which colour. It has been a little taster of what is yet to come. I know I will have to try on quite a few more dresses before I find the perfect one or maybe I have found it already and going around all these shops is a waste of time. Well I quite like wearing a wedding dress, as it makes getting married seem even more real.
